7 Steps to Becoming a Freelance Writer
7 Steps to Becoming a Freelance Writer 7 Steps to Becoming a Freelance Writer 7 Steps to Becoming a Freelance Writer By Mark Nichol You love to write, and perhaps youââ¬â¢ve even had some of your work published, but you just canââ¬â¢t seem to get your career as a freelance writer of nonfiction off the ground. Here are some flight lessons: 1. Focus Nonfiction is an enormous universe. Map out a very small segment of the cosmos. Do you enjoy writing creative nonfiction long articles and essays with a narrative flair that reads almost like fiction? Or do you have a more practical bent, tending toward how-to articles or procedural guides? Perhaps youââ¬â¢d like to write reviews of books or video games or software or appliances. Narrow your topic field; you can always widen your scope later. 2. Adopt What are your favorite Web sites or magazines or books? Are there writers whose styles inspire you? Find the publications that publish the kinds of content you like to read, and study the writing techniques on display. Donââ¬â¢t strive to imitate; use this step simply to help you find your niche. 3. List Create a short directory of publications or publishers to target. Assuming youââ¬â¢re just starting out, list targets more likely to publish writing by a beginner, but donââ¬â¢t be afraid to include a couple more high-profile publications. And donââ¬â¢t neglect whatââ¬â¢s right under your nose: community newspaper(s), local magazines, and Web sites that publicize your regionââ¬â¢s businesses or cultural and natural assets. 4. Compile Collect some of your best writing published or otherwise that represents you well and matches the type of content those publications are looking for. 5. Contact Go to your publisher directory, look up the URL for publication Web sites, and search for submission guidelines. If there are none, send a request for guidelines to the editorial departmentââ¬â¢s email address or the information address. 6. Pitch Come up with proposals for a few articles or essays youââ¬â¢d like to write, match them to various publications, and send them in. Alternatively or in addition, submit completed articles on spec. (ââ¬Å"On spec,â⬠short for ââ¬Å"on specifications,â⬠means tailoring an already written piece toward a specific market and offering it for publication.) The strategy of writing on spec has its detractors, but itââ¬â¢s a good way to break into the writing market, and even if the piece itself is turned down, it may demonstrate to an editor that your pitch is worth a look, or that you might be a good match for an article they need a writer for. 7. Persevere Repeat step 6. If your pitch or your spec article is rejected, send it to someone else. If you strike out five or ten times, retire the idea, call in another one, and start another round with a new batch of publications. (Wait a few months before circling back around to those that turned you down previously, but never delete them from your directory.) Repeat. You may get an acceptance or an assignment on your first try. (Itââ¬â¢s happened.) You may get turned down once, or ten times, or a hundred times. Donââ¬â¢t give up. If you want it bad enough, youââ¬â¢ll get it, eventually. Your goal is not to hear ââ¬Å"Noâ⬠a given number of times, but to hear ââ¬Å"Yesâ⬠once, and then once more, and then once more after that, etc. An unpublished writer is a writer who has given up. So, controversial discussions about the implementation of mandatory military service have caught the attention of public and media in recent years. Generally, people expects proper enrichment in patriotism, proper awareness about rights, duties and responsibilities of a civilian, training, mental and physical fitness among their after high school education. One can find a number of factors which hold up mandatory military service for young people after their high school education. Key characteristics of bureaucracy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Key characteristics of bureaucracy - Essay Example Webers work dealt with such dominant socio-political institutions like religious authorities, the government, industrial corporations, etc. And in the case of the government, it is through bureaucracy that it interacts with the general population. Bureaucracy can generally be said to contain the following key characteristics: efficiency, organization, procedures, protocols, laws, regulation, regimentation, specialization, etc. Weber added his own perspectives to the understanding of this construct. Firstly, Weber was not wholly critical of bureaucracy. To the contrary, he saw several positive attributes attached to the ideal type. While admitting that even the ideal type bureaucracy can be construed as legal domination, he goes on to say that it is an advancement over earlier forms such as charismatic domination and traditional domination (Huber and Shipan, 2002). In its ideal conception, bureaucracy brings efficiency, organization and concentration of the means of administration. Th ere is also a spirit of egalitarianism seen in this type, whereby the institution helps level the social and economic differences of the general population. On the flip side, the bureaucratic experience can be impersonal and inhumane at times. Weber associated the rise of bureaucracy with the industrial revolution and the attendant flourishing of the capitalist system. Hence, he sees as connection between modernity, capitalism, urbanization and the bureaucratic rationalization of society. In his influential essays such as The City and Capitalism and Rural Society in Germany, Weber acknowledges the ââ¬Å"disappearance of the sociological relevance of the urban-rural distinction. The growth of the nation-state, the development of capitalism as an international order, and the bureaucratic rationalization of more and more areas of social life all mean that the distinctiveness of

Nigeria Fertility Rates :: Fertility Rate Africa Nigerian Essays
Nigeria Fertility Rates The fertility rates in Nigeria are high because of Nigerian resistance toward family planning. Strangely, African maternal mortality rates are also the highest in the world. Nigeria, on the South Atlantic coast is one of the typical rural-based countries of Africa. It is generally lower in terms of education and income when compared to the rest of the world. Nigeria is also one of the leading populated countries of Africa with one-fourth of the Sub-Saharan African population. The country has contributed greatly to Africa's fertility rise and the continent as a whole claims up to twelve percent of the world's population, which is comparable to its nine percent population density in 1950 (Caldwell, 1990, 118) Many researchers connect Africa's economical and educational standings to the continents high fertility rates. However, this hypothesis was proven wrong by a comparison study done on the two continents of Africa and Asia. Both had similar social and economic numbers, but today Asia's economy has grown more than Africa's, and Asia's fertility rates have declined more than a third since the 1980s. As a result of these studies many researchers now say that the reason for high fertility rates in the world is among the lifestyles of the people. Nigerian lifestyle is commonly rural and less industrialized than that of the rest of the world (Caldwell, 1990, 118). Not surprisingly, the introduction of family planning to African countries such as Nigeria started out slowly. At a world population conference in Bucharest in 1974, most African governments cautiously took direction toward national population programs. Only a few countries supported such programs; Nigeria was not among them. Ten years later, at a conference in Mexico City, most African Nations supported family planning. The Nigerian government set president and now encourages women to limit themselves to four children; other countries throughout the continent are doing likewise (Caldwell, 1990, 123). Although Nigeria was one of the first to try directly controlling the number of children a couple should have, it is still struggling with family planning. Like most African governments, the Nigerian government is a little apprehensive to create a population control program, much less one similar to China's. This is due to their fear of inflicting on the views of fertility issues. Nigerian views are somewhat different; they are centered on beliefs and religious practices that are strange to the modernized world (Caldwell, 1990, 121).

Overcoming the Odds
Overcoming the Odds In life there will always be obstacles that are placed before us. Some will be easy and others will be difficult. I could remember a few incidents that made me think I would not be able to overcome certain roadblocks to achieve my goals. It was the summer of 2009; we had just got back home from Antigua & Barbuda of the sixth CVC Basketball Classic tournament. My high school coach had received a letter of acceptance to Word of Life Traditional School in Wichita, Kansas awarding me a full scholarship to play basketball for their school. At that time my mother was unemployed and we were not receiving help from other family members. The only thing that was going through my mind was saying, ââ¬Å"Yes, Iââ¬â¢ve got a school abroad to better myself and make my mother proud. â⬠When I was looking at my motherââ¬â¢s face as she read the letter; it was full of happiness and stress at the same time. The ticket to Kansas was around eight hundred to one thousand dol lars, school was opening in less than three weeks, and we did not have a dollar for my ticket or living expenses. My mother and I had asked family members, friends, and private companies. It has been three weeks and we only had received five hundred dollars. All I could do is cry realizing I canââ¬â¢t go. As my mom witnessed my pain and frustration, she held me and said ââ¬Å"God knows best and everything happens on his time, not ours. He wouldnââ¬â¢t bring us this far to fail. â⬠The first week of school had passed and things was still looking bleak. That Friday morning I was shooting on the basketball court trying to clear my head. This guy saw me and asked me why I was not in school I told him about my situation. The man pulled out his wallet and gave me his card and told me to stop by his office that afternoon. Later that day I went to his office and he handed me a check for one thousand dollars. He said, ââ¬Å"always work hard and follow your dreams and you will alwa ys have support,â⬠I got up and thanked him for giving me an opportunity to pursue my dreams, believing in me, and how I will forever be grateful for his kindness.Once I left the office, I ran all the way home with tears in my eyes and out of breath to show my mom the check. She dropped to her knees and said, ââ¬Å"Thank you Lord I know you would make it come through for my baby. â⬠That weekend I spent packing my bags to leave on Tuesday morning. My mother sat down with me and told me that she wasnââ¬â¢t going to take this journey with me, she was frighten because I was only fifteen, and I have never been anywhere out of the country without her. The thought of now having to go to a strange state where I do not know anyone. She had second thoughts about me going. I said to her it cannot be that hard to do this and I am covered in the blood of Jesus. When Tuesday came it was that time to say goodbye, my mother started crying I held her and told her it will be ok even tho ugh I was scared yet I had to embrace it also trying to hold back the tears. All in all some things might seem impossible for you; as long as you stick with it, you will be successful. Going through this has truly made me stronger person physically, mentally, and it also has helped me grow to be more mature.
